║ tenth stanza ║ voice

[Those who know Todd may notice a few differences thanks to today's curse; in addition to being noticeably lower, Todd's voice is also a bit louder, bolder and more confident than usual. The slightly self-berating comments that he makes don't seem to stem from an actual lack of confidence the same way usually do; it's quite clear that he's joking, and even if it is at his own expense, they are not the words of a young man suffering from low self-esteem.]

Good evening, City. I hope everyone's well tonight. And yes... yes, this is another poetry post. Those of you who are tired of me stumbling through my clumsy verses can feel free to skip on by. I promise not to be too offended.

I'll even give you a moment to find your buttons.

Wouldn't want to subject the unwilling to my amateurish stabs at written word.

Okay?

Alright. So, those of you who are left -- which is probably Neil and Rosella at this point, hope you're both well tonight -- I'll ask you to keep in mind that this one is still extremely rough around the edges. Of course, it is still better than what my publisher lets me get away with sometimes. I hate putting some of that stuff out but really... deadlines? Like anyone can will poetry to happen on a schedule. It's poetry. It just doesn't work that way...

Anyway. To the poem in question--

[Todd clears his throat, and then takes on a more dramatic and deliberate method of speaking.]

Through the darkness, there cut a spark
A flash from which all light has poured
What had come before cannot be seen
Too brilliant the flame which since has roared

Through violent rains and gusting winds
We try in vain to shield each fire
Persist, it does, through much hardship
But inevitably, all must expire

Thus, while that light remains yet lit
I implore you to wonder as to its aims
For though many may witness your radiance,
How many have found warmth from your flames?

[He pauses a moment, returning to a more casual mode of speaking.]

...it is pretty lousy, isn't it? It really sounded better in my head, I swear. They always do...

Still, I'll work on it. Maybe I'll have something better for you all next time. Have a good night, City.

[ooc: Todd is cursed with Road Not Taken. The same as Neil today, this is a version where at the end of the movie, Neil decides to run away to New York instead of shooting himself. And, in typical Neil fashion, has dragged Todd along for the ride. They've gone, pursued their artsy careers, and Todd is starting to eke out an extremely modest living writing his poetry. He remembers being in the City for the length of time that he has been, but obviously, thanks to Neil being alive, some things are a little different. Like the angst, and the deity deal. ALSO I'm right on the bandwagon next to Neil and old Todd will be played in comments by [livejournal.com profile] asyouwail... because I wanted more icons.]

Glad you think so~

Who are your favorite poets?

ps: Assuming this shows up as Serena? ^^;;;;

[identity profile] asyouwail.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't know, there are quite a few I like... Whitman and Thoreau are sort of standards, a few by Tennyson, Kunitz, Langston Hughes. And Shakespeare, as overdone as that answer is... I guess I'm sort of all over the place, really.

Though I have to admit, as much as I like reading it, I've always preferred writing my own. It's just a great form of expression, and one I sorely needed when I picked it up.

What about you? I mean, aside from not knowing much, are there any you've enjoyed?

oh, yes! Pretend this is Serena's network ID?

[identity profile] miss-waldorf.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I adore Thoreau.

I think awhile of Love, and while I think,
Love is to me a world,
        Sole meat and sweetest drink,
        And close connecting link
        Tween heaven and earth.

Righto~ ♥ I'm assuming he'd know her in passing from Midsummer, but yeah. Todd = not so social XD

[identity profile] asyouwail.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Friendship! Oh, how does it go now...?

I only know it is, not how or why,
My greatest happiness;
However hard I try,
Not if I were to die,
Can I explain.

That one really is beautiful, isn't it? Honestly, some of his are just amazing.

And how rude of me, to babble right away on poetry. Serena, isn't it? Forgive me, I'm not sure if we've actually spoken before. I'm Todd Anderson.

Blair is trying to hook Serena up with cute poets >3

[identity profile] miss-waldorf.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
He really is amazing. But I think you've got some talent going on there too.

And yup, it's Serena. Hi Todd, nice to meet you.

Ahahahah XD He's... gonna go back into hiding tomorrow. Pfft.

[identity profile] asyouwail.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, thank you, really. Though I've got quite a long way to go before I'm worth being mentioned alongside Thoreau.

Nice to meet you, as well. I thought I'd seen you in passing; I was in Midsummer last month.

BOO~ not even going out to see the Serena? :<

[identity profile] miss-waldorf.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Practice makes perfect!

Oh, you remember~ I think you did well on stage too.

He might? We'll... see how badly the curse aftermath goes. XDDD

[identity profile] asyouwail.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I certainly make sure to get as much practice as I can. Might as well, trapped in an alternate universe.

Really? Well, I'm glad you think so. I did manage to have a good time, though I have to admit, it's not really my forte. Honestly? I'm a bit shy for theater.

YAY~ Blair's work is not in vaaain

[identity profile] miss-waldorf.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
You must have a lot to write about here.

I agree. You make a better poet.

Certainly not! After all, he's not *rude*. Just... really, really shy. XD

[identity profile] asyouwail.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
You could say that. The second I think I might have writer's block, something completely insane and probably impossible happens.

Definitely. It was certainly a good experience, but I quite prefer writing to speaking.

Shy works for me <333

[identity profile] miss-waldorf.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Do show me more of your works if you ever write anymore.

<333 XD

[identity profile] asyouwail.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm sure there will be more. I'd be more than happy to share them.

[identity profile] miss-waldorf.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I look forward to them~
